Copan Ruinas is actually the name of a small town located about a kilometer away from the ruins of the ancient Mayan city of Copan. Although the ruins at Copan are generally overshadowed by the more well known ruins in Tikal, Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Palenque, they still rank among the most impressive accomplishments of the Mayan civilization. Copan is most well known for its amazing collection of portrait stelae--tall, narrow stones carved in relief, depicting the greatest of Copan's former kings.
